Commercial storage: network charge optimization through atypical/intensive network use

Commercial storage: network charge optimization through atypical/intensive network use.

In the event of high peak loads in your company’s electricity consumption, a battery storage system offers a wide range of options for optimizing grid charges. Because in addition to peak load capping, atypical grid usage or intensive grid usage in combination with commercial storage can also keep your grid charges as low as possible.

Why should peak loads be avoided?

Employee benefits; Benefits

When calculating electricity costs for industrial companies, energy suppliers not only take into account the energy they purchase (= labor price), but also the peak loads that occur (= power price). As a result, electricity providers are significantly increasing electricity rates for businesses – regardless of how often the electrical load spikes occur or how long they actually last. The load peaks are therefore decisive for the calculation of the network charges by the energy supplier, which is why a reduction in load peaks leads directly to cost savings for the company.

Atypical network use

In Germany, the energy suppliers set the high-load time windows every year. If you avoid peak loads during this period, manage your electricity consumption in a way that is beneficial to the grid, and thus reduce the load on the grid, the grid operator rewards you with a lower grid fee. Various requirements must be met for this atypical grid usage (Section 19 (2) Sentence 1 StromNEV) – and the use of a battery storage system gives you this flexibility.

Intensive network use

If you have intensive network usage with at least 7,000 full usage hours as well as 10 GWh annual consumption, then you can reduce your energy costs by applying for an individual network charge (pursuant to Section 19 (2) Sentence 2 StromNEV). Since these values are rarely reached, the battery storage system comes into play: This enables a uniform load profile so that the limit of 7,000 full utilization hours can be exceeded. In this way, network charges can be reduced by up to 90%.

Compared to conventional generation plants, commercial storage facilities offer the advantage that the amount of electricity purchased is shifted in time, but not reduced. In the case of standby gensets, on the other hand, the required energy is usually generated using fossil fuels, reducing the total amount of grid electricity purchased and thus the hours of full use. In this way, network charges can be reduced by up to 90%.

Versatile applicable

The use of a battery storage system is not limited to single applications. Simultaneous multiple use generates synergies and significantly reduces the payback period of the investment. A combination of the different operation management strategies self-consumption optimization, peak shaving, time-of-use or charging of electric cars increases your benefit and creates sustainable added value.
