Hofdiener parking garage in Stuttgart relies on modern battery storage systems

Reduce costs, create independence from electricity providers and offer parking customers a higher level of service, through highly efficient battery storage systems. This is the goal set by project manager Philipp Hahn in the LamA-connect project, the Parkraumgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg mbH.

Due to the expansion of renewable energies and the resulting challenges for grid operators, electricity grid fees have risen sharply in recent years. The infrastructural conditions (regular connected load of approx. 30 kW) cannot keep pace with the requirements and developments of e-mobility either. Among other things, operators of parking garages are faced with almost insurmountable tasks. Especially in metropolitan areas like Stuttgart, the density of e-vehicles is high and the demand for grid connection capacities and charging points in parking garages is correspondingly high. Classical forecasting methods on energy production have long since ceased to be sufficient for reducing energy consumption and maximizing energy production. There is a lack of targeted analyses of how renewable energy production on the one hand and the respective energy consumption on the other hand will look in the coming days. The generation and use of energy is inefficient. This is where the worldwide patented and award-winning process, based on artificial intelligence, comes into play. This makes it possible to predict the course of energy several days in advance. The leading supplier here is Olmatic GmbH from Freudenstadt, which also received the PBW project inquiry and offered the best possible customer solution as a whole, together with network partners. PBW – Parkraumgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg mbH therefore decided to opt for a modern and up-to-date solution, a battery storage system with an intelligent energy management system, instead of the very expensive structural measure with a long approval process. This also eliminates the higher electricity price resulting from the larger grid connection capacity.

Energy management systems with battery storage enable energy-intensive companies not only to cap peak loads, but also to significantly reduce their electricity costs, relieve the burden on the grid and dispense with expensive construction measures,” explains Alexander Diepolder, commercial manager of Allgäu Batterie GmbH & Co. KG. Our battery storage systems charge fully when electricity is cheap and release it when it is needed by the customer, at the required output. One of the challenges in the LamA-connect project is to match the charging needs to the existing grid-side electricity supply and the resulting intelligent load and charging management in the parking garage. The peaks in electricity supply and the load peaks of the charging processes are currently staggered. The aim is to avoid load peaks on the charging infrastructure as far as possible and to enable the intermediate storage of grid-side surpluses by the stationary battery storage system. In addition, the system is modular and can be easily expanded to meet future requirements. So it was obvious for PBW and the decision to buy a future-proof battery storage system from Allgäu Batterie was made.

Installation
The outdoor commercial storage with an available power of 50 kW is available to the parking garage primarily for charging points. This relieves the current grid connection capacity by providing interim support from the energy storage system. The complete system consists of 20 storage modules with battery management system, which are installed in a stable metal cabinet. The storage system is supplemented by an inverter as a connection to the power grid. The storage system was housed on the second floor of the parking garage and is thus protected from the weather. The memory modules were installed in a specially designed metal cabinet, which reduces the sound level to less than 35 dB. It also protects the sensitive storage units from external interference and vandalism. For the delivery of the battery storage to the place of shipment, a special transport was necessary, the complete assembly and installation of the system was carried out by the specialists of Allgäu Batterie.

Holistic project planning

Right from the first meeting with the customer, Allgäu Batterie paid attention to redundancy when planning the system. The units are modularly connected so that each storage system operates autonomously. If one battery fails, the remaining nineteen storage units can continue to operate. Allgäu Batterie has also designed the control system in the central switch and control cabinets to be fail-safe. Via the novel cloud solution, both Allgäu Batterie and the Baden-Württemberg parking company can monitor the system. “Because everything went so smoothly in Stuttgart, from installation to commissioning to ongoing operation, we are currently implementing an almost identical project at another customer in the manufacturing industry,” explains Diepolder.

Complementary customer benefits

Furthermore, the energy storage units with backup power capability enable the parking garage to continue to be supplied with power in the event of a power failure. We make an additional generator superfluous. In this way, you not only protect the environment, but also protect technical systems from the consequences of unforeseen power outages.

Be independent of rising electricity prices, increase your security of supply and avoid peak loads with the highly efficient battery storage systems from Allgäu Batterie. We also reduce your electricity costs, ask our subject matter expert:
