Load profile analysis: The first step to increasing energy efficiency

In order to record the energy efficiency of a company and to increase it in a target-oriented manner, the first step is a detailed load profile analysis. This is because electricity consumption can be subject to extreme fluctuations depending on the time of day or season (e.g., during and outside of production periods), and these fluctuations in energy consumption result in higher grid charges to the electricity supplier.

What is the load profile or load profile analysis?

In the energy industry, the so-called “load profile” describes the individual usage profile for energy consumption. With a load curve analysis, we therefore show which power is required over a certain period of time and at different points in time.

What data is collected during load profile analysis?

Special meters record the company’s electricity output every 15 minutes and document these figures over the period of approximately 1 year.

What can be gleaned from the data collected?

The data collected can be used to determine which base and peak loads occur in the company and at what times. For example, it is possible to read what the power demand is during production times, how high the maximum power is during peak load times and when exactly this occurs.

Why is a load profile analysis worthwhile for companies?

If your electricity consumption is balanced instead of highly fluctuating, you will ultimately pay fewer grid fees to the energy supplier. At the same time, electricity is particularly expensive during peak hours. With a load profile analysis, you receive a transparent picture of your current electricity consumption based on well-founded data and can significantly reduce your electricity costs by deriving targeted optimization options.

Are battery storage systems the solution?

The primary goal is to reduce energy costs by avoiding peak loads. In addition to organizational measures, such as the time-delayed starting of machines, the use of a battery storage system can also be profitable: The battery storage system is used as an alternative energy source, precisely at the time when a particularly large amount of energy is needed. This avoids peak loads for the energy supplier and keeps the network charge for companies low.

On the basis of a load profile analysis, it can be determined whether the use of a battery storage system is worthwhile for the company. At the same time, the battery storage system can be optimally aligned and dimensioned to the company’s individual load profile based on the data collected. The rule here is that the capacity of the battery storage system should be as large as necessary to meet the energy demand, and at the same time kept as small as possible to still be profitable for the company.
