Power Control: How to avoid load peaks with intelligent charging technology

Industrial companies in particular regularly experience peak loads in electricity consumption, e.g. when several machines are started up at the same time. These short but high power demands on the power grid cause electricity providers to significantly increase electricity rates for businesses – regardless of how long the electrical load peaks actually last. In order to avoid these load peaks and thus keep the network charge costs as low as possible, our ALLtrac® Plus HF charger offers a special additional function: “Power Control”.

The networking capability of our ALLtrac® Plus chargers creates the possibility with “Power Control” to define a maximum power for a whole group of chargers in terms of power consumption. An example: Eight chargers are provided for a larger fleet of industrial trucks. In order to avoid load peaks when charging the traction batteries, the limit of 50 kW should not be exceeded when charging the entire group of chargers. This maximum power can be set on the chargers in advance with the Power Control function; the charger only needs to be extended by a tablet and the corresponding software for this. If, for example, seven industrial trucks are then charged at the same time without exceeding a total power of 50 kW, the eighth charger can only be used additionally if this does not exceed the limit of 50 kW total power of the entire charger group. And this monitoring process is controlled by Power Control.

Power Control is therefore a simple way of optimally aligning energy management in your intralogistics. Power Control is also particularly exciting in connection with lithium-ion batteries, as these require much higher currents during charging than lead-acid batteries and thus lead to cost-intensive load peaks more quickly.
